Call for Applications: Radio Art Residency Weimar 2023 and 2024

The Radio Art Residency is an international fellowship programme for artistic practice on the radio. The residency is a joint project by the Goethe-Institut and Experimental Radio at Bauhaus-University Weimar in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the World Cultures Berlin) and the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar.

Once a year, the programme offers a two-month stay in Weimar for two artists from each of the regions South America, Southeast Asia and Southern Africa.

In 2023 and 2024, the radio art residency is part of the overarching roof project "Listening to the World - 100 Years of Radio": In this artistic research project, artists, scientists, media professionals and listeners from the different regions will address various questions about listening in its diversity and its transcultural interconnections.

The aim of the scholarship is to promote creative artistic work and to support the realisation of new artistic works that deal with the thematic focuses of the Listening to the World project.

During their two-month stay in Weimar fellows are invited to produce a piece on the below-mentioned questions and topics for the sound art broadcasting slot Klangkunst at Deutschlandfunk Kultur and to explore and transcend the boundaries of sound and radio art in interdisciplinary constellations, to be inspired by the intercultural dialogue at the Bauhaus University Weimar and the cultural and classical city of Weimar.
In addition, they will have the opportunity to gain a closer insight into and network of contemporary art in Germany and international sound and radio art in particular.

The fellowship is curatorially supervised and technically supported by Experimental Radio at Bauhaus-University Weimar.

Listening to the World – 100 Years of Radio

Hardly any other cultural technique has had such a lasting influence on our coexistence as listening to the radio. Radio unites peoples and creates identity, but it is also used for propaganda purposes and as an instrument of espionage and power. It has been a medium of globalisation from the beginning and plays a key role in colonial history.
Every region of the world has its own stories of listening and not listening, of communities coming together and dividing around radio. However, as radio waves do not stop at national borders, these stories are interconnected in many ways.

"Listening to the World - 100 Years of Radio" wants to anchor the historical connection between radio and globalisation in the consciousness of a broad public in and outside Germany. The innovation potential which grows from the cultural heritage of the worldwide radio landscape and the cultural technique of listening to the radio should become audible.

How has radio shaped our listening over the last 100 years? What practices and methods of listening have different cultures developed? How does radio relate to power structures and colonial history? What contribution could a culture of listening make in an increasingly globalised and at the same time polarised world in the future?

Radio Art Residency
The Radio Art Residency Weimar is a project by the Experimental Radio at Bauhaus-University Weimar, Faculty of Art and Design, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut. The programme is supported by the International Cooperation Fund of the International Relations Department at Bauhaus-University Weimar, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar.

BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAMME
* Financing of arrival and departure expenses
* Provision of accommodation in Weimar for 2 months
* A monthly fellowship of 2000 euros (includes material and production costs as well as costs for local transport and travelling)

TIME FRAME
For the period of September 1 to October 31 2023 artists that come from the regions of South America and South East Asia or have a permanent residence in one of these regions can apply.

For the period of September 1 to October 31 2024 artists that come from the regions of Southern Africa and South East Asia or have a permanent residence in one of these regions can apply.

REQUIREMENTS
The programme is for artists working in the field of acoustic and time-based arts (radio, performance and sound artists). Applications are open to artists from non-German speaking countries without residence in Germany that come from the regions South America, South East Asia and Southern Africa or have a permanent residence in these regions.

Experience in audio production necessary for the realisation of their own contribution is desired.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Radio Art Residency would like to foster artistic practices on radio. Therefore, applications with a focus on mainly journalism, entertainment (such as talk shows, features or podcasts) cannot be considered.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Please submit your application by 20 February 2023, 11:59 CET. Applications that are submitted late or incomplete will not be processed.
Unfortunately, because of the number of applications detailed feedback on the submitted application is not possible.

SELECTION OF APPLICANT
The selection will be made by representatives of the Goethe-Institut, the chair of Experimental Radio at Bauhaus-University Weimar, the Klangkunst editors at Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Haus der Kulturen der Welt and an artist from the independent scene.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is it possible to postpone the time frame of the residency?
No. The time frame of the residency is scheduled for a stay of 60 days on the period that applicant has been selected by the Radio Art Residency Weimar. Either from 1^st September 2023 until 30^th of October 2023 or 1^st September 2024 until 30^th of October 2024.

Is it necessary to participate in the entire two months (60 days) of the residency?
Yes, the fellowship obligates the artist to be present for the entire three months and not be absent for more than 7 days.

Do I have to pay for the visa?
No, fellows do not have to pay the costs of the visa themselves.

Is it possible to apply with a collaborative project?
No, the fellowship is designed for one artist.

Die Radio Art Residency ist ein internationales Stipendienprogramm für künstlerische Praxis im Radio. Die Residenz ist ein gemeinsames Projekt des Goethe-Instituts und des Experimentellen Radios an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in Kooperation mit Deutschlandfunk Kultur, dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt und der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.

Das Programm bietet einmal im Jahr einen zweimonatigen Aufenthalt in Weimar für jeweils zwei Künstler*innen aus den Regionen Südamerika, Südostasien und Südliches Afrika.
In den Jahren 2023 und 2024 ist die Radiokunstresidenz Teil des übergeordneten Dachprojekts „Listening to the World – 100 Jahre Radio“: In dem künstlerischen Forschungsprojekt setzen sich Künstler*innen, Wissenschaftler*innen, Medienschaffende und Hörer*innen aus den verschiedenen Regionen mit unterschiedlichen Fragen zum Hören in seiner Vielfalt und seinen transkulturellen Verflechtungen auseinander.

Ziel des Stipendiums ist es, kreative künstlerische Arbeit zu fördern und die Realisierung neuer künstlerischer Arbeiten zu unterstützen, die sich mit den thematischen Schwerpunkten des Listening to the World-Projekts auseinandersetzen und daran anknüpfen.

Die Stipendiat*innen sind eingeladen, während ihres zweimonatigen Aufenthalts vor Ort in Weimar ein Stück zu den unten genannten Fragestellungen und Themen für den Sendeplatz Klangkunst bei Deutschlandfunk Kultur zu produzieren und in interdisziplinären Konstellationen die Grenzen von Klang- und Radiokunst auszuloten und zu überschreiten, sich vom interkulturellen Dialog an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar sowie der Kultur- und Klassikstadt Weimar inspirieren zu lassen.
Darüber hinaus haben sie die Möglichkeit, einen näheren Einblick in die zeitgenössische Kunst in Deutschland und insbesondere in die internationale Klang- und Radiokunst zu erhalten und sich mit ihr zu vernetzen.
Das Stipendium wird kuratorisch betreut und technisch unterstützt durch das Experimentelle Radio der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Listening to the World – 100 Jahre Radio

Kaum eine Kulturtechnik hat unser Zusammenleben so nachhaltig beeinflusst wie das Radiohören. Radio vereint Völker und stiftet Identität, es wird aber auch für Propagandazwecke und als Spionage- und Machtinstrument eingesetzt. Es ist von Anfang an ein Medium der Globalisierung und spielt eine Schlüsselrolle in der Kolonialgeschichte.
Jede Region der Welt hat ihre eigenen Geschichten des Zuhörens und Nicht-Zuhörens, des Zusammenkommens und der Spaltung von Gemeinschaften rund um das Radio. Da Radiowellen jedoch nicht an Landesgrenzen halt machen, sind diese Geschichten in vielerlei Hinsicht miteinander verbunden.

„Listening to the World – 100 Jahre Radio“ will die historische Verbindung zwischen Radio und Globalisierung im Bewusstsein einer breiten Öffentlichkeit in und außerhalb Deutschlands verankern. Das Innovationspotenzial, das aus dem kulturellen Erbe der weltweiten Radiolandschaft und der Kulturtechnik des Radiohörens erwächst, soll hörbar werden.

Wie hat das Radio unser Hören in den letzten 100 Jahren geprägt? Welche Praxis und Methoden des Zuhörens haben verschiedene Kulturen entwickelt? Wie verhält sich das Radio zu Machtstrukturen und Kolonialgeschichte? Welchen Beitrag könnte eine Kultur des Zuhörens in einer zunehmend globalisierten und gleichzeitig polarisierten Welt in Zukunft leisten?

RADIO ART RESIDENCY

Die Radio Art Residency Weimar ist ein Projekt des Experimentellen Radios an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Goethe-Institut. Das Programm wird unterstützt durch den Fonds Internationale Kooperationen des Dezernates Internationale Beziehungen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Deutschlandfunk Kultur und der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar.

LEISTUNGEN DER RADIO ART RESIDENCY
* Finanzierung der An- und Abreisekosten
* Bereitstellung einer Unterkunft in Weimar für 2 Monate
* Eine monatliche Stipendienrate von 2000 Euro (beinhaltet anfallende Material- und Produktionskosten sowie lokale Transport- und Fahrtkosten)
* Eine Sendung im Programm Klangkunst von Deutschlandfunk Kultur
* Mitwirkung bei einer Veranstaltung des Listening to the World Projektes im Haus der Kulturen der Welt

ZEITLICHER RAHMEN
Für den Zeitraum vom 1. September bis 31. Oktober 2023 können sich Künstler*innen mit Herkunft oder ständigen Wohnsitz in den Regionen Südamerika und Südostasien bewerben.
Für den Zeitraum vom 1. September bis 31. Oktober 2024 können sich Künstler*innen mit Herkunft oder ständigen Wohnsitz in den Regionen Südostasien und Südliches Afrika bewerben.

VORAUSSETZUNGEN
Das Programm richtet sich an Künstler*innen, die im Feld der akustischen und zeitbasierten Kunst arbeiten (Radio-, Performance- und Klangkünstler*innen).
Bewerben können sich Künstler*innen mit Herkunft oder ständigem Wohnsitz in den Regionen Südamerika, Südostasien und Südliches Afrika, die aus dem nicht-deutschsprachigen Raum kommen und keinen Wohnsitz in Deutschland haben.
Erfahrungen in der Audioproduktion, die zur Realisierung des eigenen Beitrags notwendig sind, werden erwünscht.
Wichtiger Hinweis: Da die Residenz den Fokus auf Radiokunst setzt, können Bewerbungen mit Schwerpunkt Journalismus/Unterhaltung (wie Talk Shows, Features, Podcasts…) nicht angenommen werden.

HÄUFIG GESTELLTE FRAGEN

Kann der Zeitraum der Residenz verschoben werden?
Nein. Der Zeitraum der Residenz ist für einen Aufenthalt von 60 Tagen in dem Zeitraum vorgesehen, in dem die Bewerber*in von der Radio Art Residency Weimar ausgewählt wurde. Entweder vom 1. September bis 31. Oktober 2023 oder vom 1. September bis 31. Oktober 2024.

Ist es notwendig den gesamten Zeitraum (zwei Monate/60 Tage) anwesend zu sein?
Ja, das Stipendium verpflichtet den/die Künstler*in, während der gesamten zwei Monate anwesend zu sein und nicht länger als 7 Tage abwesend zu sein.

Muss ich für die Kosten des Visums aufkommen?
Nein, die Stipendiat*innen müssen die Kosten für das Visum nicht selbst tragen.

Ist es möglich, sich mit einem Gemeinschaftsprojekt zu bewerben?
Nein, das Stipendium ist für jeweils eine*n Künstler*in gedacht.
